LaVerne Nieland of Auburn Dies in Crash
LaVerne A. Nieland, 29, Auburn, was killed Monday night in a traffic accident three and a half miles west of Lake City on Iowa 175, Calhoun County Sheriff Leroy Morgan reported.
Injured in the accident was Albert W. Clark, 57, Lake City, who was treated and released at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City. Clark was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by Thomas M. Waltz, 27, DCS Moines.
Morgan said Nieland's car, westbound on the highway, apparently crossed the center line and collided with the pickup driven by Waltz. The impact caused the Nieland vehicle to strike a car driven by Dave J. Gehling, 27, Vail, which was traveling ahead of the Nieland vehicle at the time of the accident, Morgan said. Gehling and three passengers were not injured.
Morgan said Nieland was thrown from his vehicle and added there is some indication he was run over by a car driven by Lane Bachman, Auburn. However, this was still under investigation, the Sheriff said Nieland, who was believe to have been driving to Auburn when, the accident occurred is the sixth traffic fatality in Calhoun County this year.
Funeral arrangements for Nieland are pending at the Huffman Memorial Chapel, Lake City.
Nieland was born at Lake City Nov. 4, 1943, a son of John and Rose Freking Nieland. He graduated from Lake City High School in 1962 and was a 1967 graduate of Iowa State University, where he majored in mechanical engineering. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Auburn.
Survivors include his parents of Auburn; two brothers, Marvin, with the Air Force in Taiwan, and Robert, of Clinton; and a sister, Velma, of Auburn.
